Adams, Joseph

Student at St George's Hospital under John Hunter; studied also at St Bartholomew's Hospital and Guy's Hospital. Became a member of the Corporation of Surgeons in 1790. MD 1795 from the University of Aberdeen based on his work 'Morbid Poisons'. Lived and work at Madeira for eight years, and is said to have introduced cowpox to Madeira. Admitted as an extra-licentiate to the London Royal College of Physicians on his return to England in 1805. Physician at the Smallpox Hospital 1806, where he contributed to a report on smallpox. Remembered as the founder of medical genetics.

Bleaden, Wilfred Henry

Son of the Reverend W. H. Bleaden, Vicar of St Mary's, Paddington.

Educated at St Edmund's School, Oxford and then at Brasenose College, Oxford. While at Oxford, in 1908, he was on the British Olympic team for the long jump. He obtained his BA in 1909. MB MCh Oxford 1911, MS 1919, MRCS and FRCS 1921.

After qualifying he held several house positions at St George's Hospital. During the First World War he was a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy. After the war ended, he went into private practice in Ashley Gardens, Westminster. He was also the visiting apothecary at St George's Hospital and a medical referee for several insurance companies.

He died 30 August 1965.
