Medical notes: 'There was no history of scarlatina. The patient believed that she had some disease of the kidneys when she was about 4 years of age, but no definite information could be obtained. She was believed to have had ‘hooping cough inflammation of the kidneys and congestion of the lungs’. She was always anaemic. Three years before her admission she became a barmaid and drank port and beer, but according to her own account she did not drink very much’
