Medical notes: 'He could give no history of heritable disease. He had very good health as a boy, joined the 17th Lancers in 1857 at 19, & served with them until 1869. He passed 8 years in India, & had a few attacks of fever without rigors. Joined the army hospital corps at Malta in 1869, leaving in 1879 without any further illness. Throughout these 18 years he had kept to very temperate habits and had not been invalided for more than a week'
