Medical notes: 'This woman stated that her age was forty-seven, but she appeared to be considerably older. Very little account was given by her or friends of her previous history. For nearly eighteen months she had been feeling languid & out of sorts, but six weeks before admission she caught a violent cold which was followed by sharp pain in the right side, & a fortnight later by spitting of blood which continued more or less for three weeks’
