Medical notes: 'The man said he had not suffered from rheumatism nor from gout, that he had burnt his legs about 40 years before he came to the hospital, but that he had never been laid up with any bodily illness. He gave no history pointing to syphilis, and denied having had it. He drank chiefly beer and did not take more than 3 pints a day, as a rule. A week before Christmas 1887 he began to suffer from pain at the lower part of his chest’
