Medical notes: 'This patient's mother suffered from asthma and came of a consumptive family. The woman was a cook, Irish, married but childless. She had been subject to a chronic cough, but had never been previously laid up by illness. For two years she had been short of breath on exertion. On April 7th 1891 at 8pm she suddenly ‘felt stupid' and found that her left leg was numb. She sat down and was unable to rise without assistance. There was no loss of consciousness, and the whole affair was treated at the time as a joke'
