Medical notes: 'This man gave no history of rheumatism, gout or plumbism, and it is probable that he had always been temperate in the matter of alcohol. His health, formerly good, began to fail in 1887, chiefly by way of bronchitis and chronic shortness of breath. The legs became oedematous in December 1890, and then he was laid up for most of the winter. In the summer he returned to work and was fairly well till the autumn. He became incapacitated a fortnight before admission, oedema of the legs returning'
