Medical notes: 'Patient was in Hospital for first time in 1877, he was then transferred from the Physicians – He had what was thought to be Psoas abscess (Right side) without spinal disease. This was opened and he was discharged much improved though the wounds had not quite healed – The wounds never healed after his discharge and a month or six weeks before second admission June 19 1877 some painful swelling appeared in left Iliac region, and soon spread down to Scarpa's triangle and continued increasing up to time of admission'
