Medical notes: 'This lad was brought to the hospital on the evening of the 3rd Dec apparently in the last stage of acute peritonitis, suffering intense pain in the abdomen aggravated on the very lightest touch, with a scarcely perceptible pulse, and in a condition quite beyond the power of any mode of treatmentn to alleviate. No distinct account could be obtained of the cause or commencement of his present illness. He was a sailor having just returned fromm sea, and there was a report of a hurt, accidental or otherwise, on the lower part of the abdomen, the exact nature of which could not be made out’
