Medical notes: 'There was no direct evidence of syphilis. She had suffered from cough, shortness of breath & pain in the left side of the chest for 3 months. She was a thin, anaemic red-haired woman complaining in a whisper of pain under the left clavicle and mammary region. Friction sounds were hears in the formed place. No particular attention was attracted to the patient, and it was not till some days later that a more complete examination led to a diagnosis of aortic aneurism'
